Medicare Demand Letter Rebuttals
National Government Services has seen an influx of overpayment rebuttal inquiries and here’s what you need to know.
Rebuttals should be rare and only approved if NGS has processed an account(s) receivable incorrectly, not just because one disagrees with an overpayment. In addition, the rebuttal process is not an appeal and may not change the NGS recoupment process. Rebuttals are only granted when NGS has processing errors. If providers have reason to believe the withhold should not occur, they have 15 days from the date of the demand letter to notify NGS of rebuttal; however, we stress, the rebuttal process is not an appeal of the overpayment determination, it’s a statement of opportunity for providers to refute an overpayment and the rebuttal process will not delay the recoupment process.
