Government Efforts to Combat Cancer Deaths Related to Tobacco
Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer and cancer deaths. Lung cancer is what normally is thought of when talking about tobacco and cancer, but there are other cancers that tobacco use can cause such as mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, liver, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum and a type of leukemia.
The White House recently reignited the Cancer Moonshot, setting an ambitious, achievable goal to reduce the death rate from cancer by at least 50 percent over the next 25 years and improve the experience of people and families living with and surviving cancer, ultimately ending cancer as we know it today.
The White House Cancer Moonshot hosted a forum to highlight the current Administration’s commitment to tackling the biggest single driver of cancer deaths in this country—smoking—and efforts underway across sectors to equitably expand access to effective smoking cessation support.
