Get Access to Keep Provider Enrollment Records Up To Date with Medicare

If you need to manage Medicare enrollment information for an individual provider or entity electronically through PECOS, you must have authorized access. This access will allow submission of applications for individual providers (NPI Type 1) and entities (NPI Type 2) in the PECOS system. Understanding who has access is crucial for maintaining security and reducing fraud.

Individual providers can either submit their own applications or grant permission via the I&A Management System for others to act on their behalf. Keep in mind that, depending on the application type, only the provider or authorized/delegated official listed in PECOS can sign and date CMS applications.

Each individual must establish an account in the Identity & Access Management System, which provides a single account to access CMS systems: I&A, NPPES and PECOS.

  • National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES): NPI records are kept for:
    • Type 1 NPI: Individual providers
    • Type 2 NPI: Entities, groups, or corporate suppliers
  • Provider Enrollment Chain and Ownership System (PECOS): A repository for enrollment records currently on file with Medicare for individual providers or entities.

As an Authorized Official or Access Manager in the I&A system, you can:

  • Manage Staff: Add, modify and grant access to staff affiliated with your organization.
  • Manage Connections: Establish, approve, reject and disable connections between your employer(s).

Accessing PECOS enables authorized users to manage Medicare enrollment records for initial enrollment, revalidation or updates.
