Global Period Services - HCPCS Code G0559

As of 1/1/2025, CMS has implemented HCPCS Code G0559 to capture work performed by a provider other than the performing surgeon during the global period associated with most surgical procedures. The code may be billed with or without a modifier 54 on the initial surgical service that was billed, indicating that a transfer of care has been initiated by the surgeon.

The code addresses the work that a provider of any specialty may need to perform relative to the patient’s postoperative assessment and care. This may include a review of the scope and intent of the surgical procedure and the medical record as it pertains to the patient’s preoperative status and both the intraoperative and postoperative clinical course.

CMS expects that G0559 will be submitted once per practitioner during the 90-day global period for a major surgery. The practitioner may be a primary care provider or a specialty provider who is treating the patient during the global period. The use of G0559 is not restricted by provider specialty.
