Lung Cancer Screening
Early detection by screening is an important strategy for patients with a high risk for lung cancer. The LDCT is an additional preventive service benefit under the Medicare program.
CMS established NCD for lung cancer screening (LDCT) (NCD 210.14). As part of the NCD 210.14, all criteria listed in the NCD must be met to include requirements for reading radiologists and radiology imaging facilities.
IDTFs may be eligible to perform the lung cancer screening, but must meet all criteria within NCD 210.14. Before the beneficiary’s first lung cancer LDCT screening, the beneficiary must receive a counseling and shared decision making visit that meets all criteria within NCD 210.14, and is appropriately documented in the beneficiary’s medical records.
In addition, collecting and submitting data to CMS-approved registry is required. Visit CMS’ Lung Cancer Screening Registries web page for a list of CMS-approved registries.
