Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program

Framework for Prevention and Goals

CMS along with the CDC provides a framework for diabetes prevention efforts. It brings together partners from the public and private sectors to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

The MDPP is structured sessions with a coach, using a CDC-approved curriculum to provide training in dietary change, increased physical activity and weight loss strategies.

Effective 1/1/2022, allowance is twelve months of core sessions for beneficiaries with an indication of prediabetes.

CMS works to make it easier for people with prediabetes to participate in affordable, high-quality lifestyle change programs to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes and improve their overall health.

To ensure high quality, CDC recognizes lifestyle change programs that meet certain standards and show they can achieve results. These standards include following an approved curriculum, facilitation by a trained lifestyle coach and submitting data every 6 months to show that the program is having an impact.

This program is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
